A better representation of volatile organic compound chemistry in WRF-Chem and its impact on ozone over Los Angeles

Abstract. The declining trend in vehicle emissions has underscored the growing significance of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from volatile chemical products (VCPs). However, accurately representing VOC chemistry in simplified chemical mechanisms remains challenging due to its chemical complexity including speciation and reactivity. Previous studies have predominantly focused on VOCs from fossil fuel sources, leading to an underrepresentation of VOC chemistry from VCP sources. We developed an integrated chemical mechanism, RACM2B-VCP, that is compatible with WRF-Chem and is aimed at enhancing the representation of VOC chemistry, particularly from VCP sources, within the present urban environment. Evaluation against the Air Quality System (AQS) network data demonstrates that our model configured with RACM2B-VCP reproduces both the magnitude and spatial variability of O3 and PM2.5 in Los Angeles. Furthermore, evaluation against comprehensive measurements of O3 and PM2.5 precursors from the Reevaluating the Chemistry of Air Pollutants in California (RECAP-CA) airborne campaign and the Southwest Urban NOx and VOC Experiment (SUNVEx) ground site and mobile laboratory campaign confirm the model's accuracy in representing NOx and many VOCs and highlight remaining biases. Although there exists an underprediction in the total VOC reactivity of observed VOC species, our model with RACM2B-VCP exhibits good agreement for VOC markers emitted from different sectors, including biogenic, fossil fuel, and VCP sources. Through sensitivity analyses, we probe the contributions of VCP and fossil fuel emissions to total VOC reactivity and O3. Our results reveal that 52 % of the VOC reactivity and 35 % of the local enhancement of MDA8 O3 arise from anthropogenic VOC emissions in Los Angeles. Significantly, over 50 % of this anthropogenic fraction of either VOC reactivity or O3 is attributed to VCP emissions. The RACM2B-VCP mechanism created, described, and evaluated in this work is ideally suited for accurately representing ozone for the right reasons in the present urban environment where mobile, biogenic, and VCP VOCs are all important contributors to ozone formation.

Biogenic volatile organic compounds in forest therapy base: A source of air pollutants or a healthcare function?

Air pollution poses a significant threat to public health, while biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) play a crucial role in both aspects. However, the unclear relationship between BVOCs and air pollutants in the under-canopy space limits the accuracy of air pollution control and the exploitation of forest healthcare functions. To clarify the variation of BVOCs in forest therapy bases, and their impacts on ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) at nose height, total VOCs (TVOCs) in the forest were collected during typical sunny days, while air pollutants and meteorological factors were observed simultaneously. The results showed that the branch-level emissions of P. tabuliformis were dominated by healthcare-effective monoterpenoids, with only α-pinene having relative air concentrations of over 5 % in forest air samples. The correlation between concentrations of under-canopy TVOCs and emission rates of BVOCs from P. tabuliformis was weak (p > 0.09) in all seasons. However, the correlation between concentrations of TVOCs and the concentrations of O3 and PM2.5 showed clear seasonal differences. In spring, TVOCs only showed a significant negative correlation with PM2.5 in the forest (p < 0.01). In summer and autumn, TVOCs were significantly negatively correlated with both O3 (p < 0.001) and PM2.5 (p < 0.01). Specifically, the negative linear relationships were more pronounced for O3 and oxygenated VOCs in autumn (R2 = 0.40, p < 0.001) than for other relationships. The relationship between air pollutant concentrations inside and outside the forest also showed significant seasonal differences, generally characterized by a weaker correlation between them during seasons of strong emissions. Therefore, BVOCs in coniferous forests are health functions as they can provide healthcare effects and mitigate the concentration of air pollutants in the forest, and the establishment of forest therapy bases in rural areas with low NOx can be a sensible approach to promote good health, well-being, and sustainable development.

Characterizing BVOC emissions of common plant species in northern China using real world measurements: Towards strategic species selection to minimize ozone forming potential of urban greening

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) emitted by plants play a crucial role in ozone (O3) formation. Avoiding urban air quality trade-offs of urban greening involves selecting low-emission and O3 forming potential (OFP) plants. Using a dynamic enclosure system and the TD-GC-MS technique, we measured BVOC emissions from 47 common urban greening plant species in northern China. The potential to form O3 was estimated based on the emission quantification of 63 compounds and their maximum incremental reactivity (MIR) values. The results indicated that isoprene and most of monoterpene dominated BVOC emissions. Most of the broad-leaved trees were isoprene emitter, whereas needle-leaved and some broad-leaved trees emitted monoterpene and sesquiterpene. Alkene emissions, such as 1-hexene, were relatively low, while Phoebe zhennan exhibited higher aromatics such as m-ethyltoluene. Broad-leaved trees had a higher potential for O3 generation compared to needle-leaved trees. BVOC emission rates and OFP varied significantly among plant species, ranging from 0.08 to 112.23 μg/(g h) and 0.33–1130.75 μg/(g h), respectively. To minimize BVOC emissions and O3 pollution, we determined a list of preferred urban greening plants using hierarchical cluster analysis combined BVOC emission rates and OFPs. Based on our findings, we recommend incorporating plants with low BVOC emissions and OFPs, such as Eucommia ulmoides, Firmiana platanifolia, and Cercis chinensis, in future urban greening plans to prevent strengthening O3 pollution in northern China.

VELVET: an enclosure vegetation system to measure BVOC emission fingerprints in temperate and tropical climates

The VELVET chamber, utilizing the vegetation enclosure technique, was used to measure biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions from representative plant leaves in temperate and tropical climates. This study demonstrates the instrument’s capability, among the various measurements conducted in other studies using the vegetation enclosure technique, in qualifying and quantifying volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from different tree species. The measurements were performed using Tenax tubes for sampling and GC/MS analysis. The use of PTR-ToF-MS for temperate species allows us to perform flux measurements in the chamber of Norway spruce (Picea abies), European beech (Fagus sylvatica), and common hazel tree (Corylus avellana) in the Puy de Dôme region (France). We found that all species are monoterpene emitters (on average 1.52 ± 0.29 ng m−2 s−1) and more particularly sesquiterpene emitters for C. avellana (7.49 ± 0.70 ng m−2 s−1). In the tropical region of Réunion Island (France), comprehensive measurements were conducted across three distinct vegetation types, on 10 of the most representative species, native and exotic to the island. The study revealed that emissions from these species were influenced by spatial variability, their environment, and the type of the forest (cloud forest, and high- and low-altitude forests). Notably, the research marked a groundbreaking achievement by capturing emissions from endemic species on the island for the first time. The collected data will be added to the biogenic emission inventory of the island, thereby enhancing model simulations by incorporating these new measurements.

Evaluation of isoprene emissions from the coupled model SURFEX–MEGANv2.1

Abstract. Isoprene, a key biogenic volatile organic compound, plays a pivotal role in atmospheric chemistry. Due to its high reactivity, this compound contributes significantly to the production of tropospheric ozone in polluted areas and to the formation of secondary organic aerosols. The assessment of biogenic emissions is of great importance for regional and global air quality evaluation. In this study, we implemented the biogenic emission model MEGANv2.1 (Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature, version 2.1) in the surface model SURFEXv8.1 (SURface EXternalisée in French, version 8.1). This coupling aims to improve the estimation of biogenic emissions using the detailed vegetation-type-dependent treatment included in the SURFEX vegetation ISBA (Interaction between Soil Biosphere and Atmosphere) scheme. This scheme provides vegetation-dependent parameters such as leaf area index and soil moisture to MEGAN. This approach enables a more accurate estimation of biogenic fluxes compared to the stand-alone MEGAN model, which relies on average input values for all vegetation types. The present study focuses on the assessment of the SURFEX–MEGAN model isoprene emissions. An evaluation of the coupled SURFEX–MEGAN model results was carried out by conducting a global isoprene emission simulation in 2019 and by comparing the simulation results with other MEGAN-based isoprene inventories. The coupled model estimates a total global isoprene emission of 443 Tg in 2019. The estimated isoprene is within the range of results obtained with other MEGAN-based isoprene inventories, ranging from 311 to 637 Tg. The spatial distribution of SURFEX–MEGAN isoprene is consistent with other studies, with some differences located in low-isoprene-emission regions. Several sensitivity tests were conducted to quantify the impact of different model inputs and configurations on isoprene emissions. Using different meteorological forcings resulted in a ±5 % change in isoprene emissions using MERRA (Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications) and IFS (Integrated Forecasting System) compared with ERA5. The impact of using different emission factor data was also investigated. The use of PFT (plant functional type) spatial coverage and PFT-dependent emission potential data resulted in a 12 % reduction compared to using the isoprene emission potential gridded map. A significant reduction of around 38 % in global isoprene emissions was observed in the third sensitivity analysis, which applied a parameterization of soil moisture deficit, particularly in certain regions of Australia, Africa, and South America. The significance of coupling the SURFEX and MEGAN models lies particularly in the ability of the coupled model to be forced with meteorological data from any period. This means, for instance, that this system can be used to predict biogenic emissions in the future. This aspect of our work is significant given the changes that biogenic organic compounds are expected to undergo as a result of changes in their climatic factors.

Molecular characteristics and formation mechanisms of biogenic secondary organic aerosols in the mountainous background atmosphere of southern China

Biogenic secondary organic aerosols (BSOA) play a crucial role in atmospheric chemistry, with significant implications for air quality and human health. However, the mechanisms by which anthropogenic emissions influence the formation of BSOA in the real atmosphere have not been fully understood. In this study, fine aerosol (PM2.5) samples were collected during both the wet and dry seasons at a high-altitude (1690 m) background site in the Nanling Mountains. Eleven typical secondary organic aerosols (SOA) tracers derived from isoprene (SOAI), α/β-pinene (SOAM), β-caryophyllene (SOAS), and toluene (SOAA), as well as water-soluble inorganic ions and the ambient concentrations of isoprene and its two primary oxidation products, were measured. The results showed that the concentrations and composition of SOA tracers exhibited significant seasonal variations. The total concentration of SOA tracers in the wet season (159 ± 100 ng m−3) was almost three times higher than that in the dry season (61 ± 68 ng m−3). SOAI dominated in both seasons, followed by SOAM, SOAS, and SOAA. Compared with other studies, the concentrations of SOAI and SOAA in the wet season were relatively high, which was mainly attributed to the rapid oxidation of their precursors due to the higher atmospheric oxidative capacity. C5-alkene triols had a significantly higher proportion in SOAI species than in other mountaintop sites. Temperature was the main factor causing the seasonal difference in the concentration of SOAI. Anthropogenic pollutants significantly promoted the formation of SOAI in the wet season. The influence of anthropogenic pollutants on the reaction pathway of IEPOX was consistent in both seasons, favoring the formation of C5-alkene triols. Our study provides vital insights into the molecular characteristics and formation mechanisms of BSOA in a high-altitude background region. It also highlights that the complex air pollution not only affects BSOA concentrations but also the reaction pathways of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) transforming into BSOA.

Greenspaces And Cardiovascular Health.

Accumulating evidence suggests that living in areas of high surrounding greenness or even brief exposures to areas of high greenery is conducive to cardiovascular health, which may be related to the environmental, social, psychological, and physiological benefits of greenspaces. Recent data from multiple cross-sectional, longitudinal, and cohort studies suggest that living in areas of high surrounding greenness is associated with a lower risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. High levels of neighborhood greenery have been linked also to a decrease in the burden of cardiovascular disease risk factors as reflected by lower rates of hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes. Those who live in greener environments report better mental health and more frequent social interactions, which can benefit cardiovascular health as well. In this narrative review, we discuss evidence linking greenspaces to cardiovascular health as well as the potential mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of greenspaces, including the impact of vegetation on air, noise and light pollution, ambient temperature, physical activity, mental health, and biodiversity. We review literature on the beneficial effects of acute and chronic exposure to nature on cardiovascular disease risk factors, inflammation and immune function, and we highlight the potential cardiovascular effects of biogenic volatile organic compounds that are emitted by trees and shrubs. We identify current knowledge gaps in this area and underscore the need for additional population studies to understand more clearly and precisely the link between greenness and health. Such understanding is urgently needed to fully redeem the promise of greenspaces in preventing adverse environmental exposures, mitigating the effects of climate change, and creating healthier living environments.

Impact of HO2∕RO2 ratio on highly oxygenated α-pinene photooxidation products and secondary organic aerosol formation potential

Abstract. Highly oxygenated molecules (HOMs) from the atmospheric oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds are important contributors to secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Organic peroxy radicals (RO2) and hydroperoxy radicals (HO2) are key species influencing the HOM product distribution. In laboratory studies, experimental requirements often result in overemphasis on RO2 cross-reactions compared to reactions of RO2 with HO2. We analyzed the photochemical formation of HOMs from α-pinene and their potential to contribute to SOA formation under high (≈1/1) and low (≈1/100) HO2/RO2 conditions. As HO2/RO2 &gt; 1 is prevalent in the daytime atmosphere, sufficiently high HO2/RO2 is crucial to mimic atmospheric conditions and to prevent biases by low HO2/RO2 on the HOM product distribution and thus SOA yield. Experiments were performed under steady-state conditions in the new, continuously stirred tank reactor SAPHIR-STAR at Forschungszentrum Jülich. The HO2/RO2 ratio was increased by adding CO while keeping the OH concentration constant. We determined the HOM's SOA formation potential, considering its fraction remaining in the gas phase after seeding with (NH4)2SO4 aerosol. An increase in HO2/RO2 led to a reduction in SOA formation potential, with the main driver being a ∼ 60 % reduction in HOM-accretion products. We also observed a shift in HOM-monomer functionalization from carbonyl to hydroperoxide groups. We determined a reduction of the HOM's SOA formation potential by ∼ 30 % at HO2/RO2 ≈1/1 compared to HO2/RO2 ≈ 1/100. Particle-phase observations measured a similar decrease in SOA mass and yield. Our study shows that too low HO2/RO2 ratios compared to the atmosphere can lead to an overestimation of SOA yields.

Impact of greening trends on biogenic volatile organic compound emissions in China from 1985 to 2022: Contributions of afforestation projects

The rapid expansion of green areas in China has enhanced carbon sinks, but it also presents challenges regarding increased biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions. This study examines the impact of greening trends on BVOC emissions in China from 1985 to 2001 and from 2001 to 2022, focusing on evaluating long-term trends in BVOC emissions within eight afforestation project areas during these two periods. Emission factors for 62 dominant tree species and provincial Plant Functional Types were updated. The BVOC emission inventories were developed for China at a spatial resolution of 27 km × 27 km using the Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature. The national BVOC emissions in 2018 were estimated at 54.24 Tg, with isoprene, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and other BVOC contributing 26.94 Tg, 2.29 Tg, 0.44 Tg, and 24.57 Tg, respectively. Over the past 37 years, BVOC emissions experienced a slow growth rate of 1.7 % (0.79 Tg) during 1985–2001, followed by a significant increase of 12 % (6 Tg) from 2001 to 2022. BVOC emissions in the eight afforestation project areas increased by 2 % and 20 % during the two periods. From 2001 to 2022, at the regional scale, the Shelterbelt program for the middle reaches of the Yellow River area exhibited the largest rate of increase (43 %) in BVOC emissions. The Shelterbelt program for the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River made the most largest contribution (45 %) to the national increase in BVOC emissions. Afforestation projects have shifted towards planting more broadleaf trees than needleleaf trees from 2001 to 2022, and there also showed a change from herbaceous plants to broadleaf trees. These trends have led to higher average emission factors for vegetation, resulting in increased BVOC emissions. It underscores the importance of considering BVOC emissions when evaluating afforestation initiatives, emphasizing the need to balancing ecological benefits with potential atmospheric consequences.

Elevated Ozone Reduces the Quality of Tea Leaves but May Improve the Resistance of Tea Plants.

Tropospheric ozone (O3) pollution can affect plant nutritional quality and secondary metabolites by altering plant biochemistry and physiology, which may lead to unpredictable effects on crop quality and resistance to pests and diseases. Here, we investigated the effects of O3 (ambient air, Am; ambient air +80 ppb of O3, EO3) on the quality compounds and chemical defenses of a widely cultivated tea variety in China (Camellia sinensis cv. 'Baiye 1 Hao') using open-top chamber (OTC). We found that elevated O3 increased the ratio of total polyphenols to free amino acids while decreasing the value of the catechin quality index, indicating a reduction in leaf quality for green tea. Specifically, elevated O3 reduced concentrations of amino acids and caffeine but shows no impact on the concentrations of total polyphenols in tea leaves. Within individual catechins, elevated O3 increased the concentrations of ester catechins but not non-ester catechins, resulting in a slight increase in total catechins. Moreover, elevated O3 increased the emission of biogenic volatile organic compounds involved in plant defense against herbivores and parasites, including green leaf volatiles, aromatics, and terpenes. Additionally, concentrations of main chemical defenses, represented as condensed tannins and lignin, in tea leaves also increased in response to elevated O3. In conclusion, our results suggest that elevated ground-level O3 may reduce the quality of tea leaves but could potentially enhance the resistance of tea plants to biotic stresses.

Effect of Relative Humidity on the Rate of New Particle Formation for Different VOCs

Atmospheric new particle formation (NPF) is an important source of aerosol particles and cloud condensation nuclei, which affect both climate and human health. In pristine environments, oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is a major contributor to NPF. However, the impact of relative humidity (RH) on NPF from these precursors remains poorly understood. Herein, we report on NPF, as inferred from measurements of total particle number density with a particle diameter (dp) &gt; 7 nm, from three VOCs (sabinene, α-terpineol, and myrtenol) subjected to dark ozonolysis. From a series of comparative experiments under humid (60% RH) and dry (~0% RH) conditions and a variety of VOC mixing ratios (ξVOC, parts per billion by volume, ppbv), we show varied behavior in NPF at elevated RH depending on the VOC and ξVOC. In general, RH-dependent enhancement of NPF at an ξVOC between &lt;1 ppbv and 20 ppbv was observed for select VOCs. Our results suggest that gaseous water at particle genesis enhances NPF by promoting the formation of low-volatility organic compound gas-phase products (LVOCs). This is supported by measurements of the rate of NPF for α-pinene-derived SOA, where RH had a greater influence on the initial rate of NPF than did ξVOC and ξO3.

Measurement report: Bio-physicochemistry of tropical clouds at Maïdo (Réunion, Indian Ocean): overview of results from the BIO-MAÏDO campaign

Abstract. The BIO-MAÏDO (Bio-physicochemistry of tropical clouds at Maïdo: processes and impacts on secondary organic aerosols formation) campaign was conducted from 13 March to 4 April 2019 on the tropical island of Réunion. The main objective of the project was to improve understanding of cloud impacts on the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) from biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) precursors in a tropical environment. Instruments were deployed at five sites: a receptor site, Maïdo Observatory (MO) at 2165 m a.s.l. and four sites along the slope of the Maïdo mountain. Observations include measurements of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and characterization of the physical, chemical and biological (bacterial diversity and culture-based approaches) properties of aerosols and cloud water. Turbulent parameters of the boundary layer, radiative fluxes and emissions fluxes of BVOCs from the surrounding vegetation were measured to help interpret observed chemical concentrations in the different phases. Dynamical analyses showed two preferred trajectory routes for air masses arriving at MO during the daytime. Both trajectories correspond to return branches of the trade winds associated with upslope thermal breezes, where air masses likely encountered cloud processing. The highest mixing ratios of oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) were measured above the site located in the endemic forest and the highest contribution of OVOCs to total VOCs at MO. Chemical compositions of particles during daytime showed higher concentrations of oxalic acid, a tracer of cloud processing and photochemical aging, and a more oxidized organic aerosol at MO than at other sites. Approximately 20 % of the dissolved organic compounds were analyzed. Additional analyses by ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry will explore the complexity of the missing cloud organic matter.

Climate-affected multi-decadal variations of biogenic volatile organic compounds in Pinus tabuliformis growth rings

Long-term dynamics of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) in trees are rarely reported, despite environmental factors (such as climate change) influencing their growth and the subsequent chemical accumulation. For this, tree growth rings provide a promising biological proxy for the long-time variation and correlation with environmental changes. Therefore, tree rings from Pinus tabuliformis (two stem disks and 40 tree cores) were collected in the Taihang Mountain Macaque National Nature Reserve of China. These samples were divided into seven 5-year resolutions over the 34-year period 1985 to 2018. This enabled analysis of multi-decadal variations of compounds and their correlation with climate variability. A total of 292 BVOCs were detected; however, only 18 compounds were found together across all the 7 growth-periods. Temporal analyses showed decreasing trends for monoterpenes (0.026%/yr) and diterpenes (0.120%/yr), whereas alcohols and oxygenated monoterpenes showed increasing trends at 0.031%/yr and 0.042%/yr, respectively. Correlation analyses showed no obvious link to yearly precipitation, while seasonal temperature had a negative effect on monoterpenes and diterpenes but positive effects on alcohols and oxygenated monoterpenes (all P &lt; 0.05). The present study showed that dendrochronology is a suitable method for re-establishing the biological effects from historical climate variability on key tree species.

Measuring Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds from Leaves Exposed to Submicron Black Carbon Using Portable Sensor

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are responsible for the formation of ozone and secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). Our knowledge about how black carbon particles influence BVOC emissions from terrestrial ecosystems is limited; terrestrial vegetation captures black carbon particles as a sink. In this research, the BVOC emissions from the leaves of four terrestrial plants were measured using an RAE PGM-7300 BVOC analyzer. Then, the leaves from four types of trees were exposed to submicron carbon black for 24 h and 48 h in an ambient environment, respectively. Comparisons between the BVOC emissions before and after exposure to submicron carbon black were performed. Our results indicated that the emissions of BVOC from the leaves of four types of trees varied from 90 to 270 μg g−1 h−1 and depended on the species. The exposure to submicron black carbon particles had negligible impacts on the BVOC emissions from the leaves of four types of trees.

Enantioselective Detection of Gaseous Odorants with Peptide-Graphene Sensors Operating in Humid Environments.

Replicating the sense of smell presents an ongoing challenge in the development of biomimetic devices. Olfactory receptors exhibit remarkable discriminatory abilities, including the enantioselective detection of individual odorant molecules. Graphene has emerged as a promising material for biomimetic electronic devices due to its unique electrical properties and exceptional sensitivity. However, the efficient detection of nonpolar odor molecules using transistor-based graphene sensors in a gas phase in environmental conditions remains challenging due to high sensitivity to water vapor. This limitation has impeded the practical development of gas-phase graphene odor sensors capable of selective detection, particularly in humid environments. In this study, we address this challenge by introducing peptide-functionalized graphene sensors that effectively mitigate undesired responses to changes in humidity. Additionally, we demonstrate the significant role of humidity in facilitating the selective detection of odorant molecules by the peptides. These peptides, designed to mimic a fruit fly olfactory receptor, spontaneously assemble into a monomolecular layer on graphene, enabling precise and specific odorant detection. The developed sensors exhibit notable enantioselectivity, achieving a remarkable 35-fold signal contrast between d- and l-limonene. Furthermore, these sensors display distinct responses to various other biogenic volatile organic compounds, demonstrating their versatility as robust tools for odor detection. By acting as both a bioprobe and an electrical signal amplifier, the peptide layer represents a novel and effective strategy to achieve selective odorant detection under normal atmospheric conditions using graphene sensors. This study offers valuable insights into the development of practical odor-sensing technologies with potential applications in diverse fields.

Nighttime reactions of a series of unsaturated alcohols with NO3•: Kinetics, products and mechanisms study

Unsaturated alcohols are a class of Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) emitted in large quantities by plants when damaged or under adverse environmental conditions, and studies on their atmospheric degradation at night are still lacking. We used chamber experiments to study the gas-phase reactions of three unsaturated alcohols, E-2-penten-1-ol, Z-2-hexen-1-ol and Z-3-hepten-1-ol, with NO3 radicals (NO3•) during the night. The rate constants of these reactions were (11.7 ± 1.76) × 10−13, (8.55 ± 1.33) × 10−13 and (6.08 ± 0.47) × 10−13 cm3/(molecule·s) at 298K and 760 Torr, respectively. In contrast, the reaction rate of similar substances with ozone was about 10−18 cm3/(molecule·s), which indicates that the reaction with NO3• is the main oxidation pathway for unsaturated alcohols at night. Small molecule aldehydes and ketones were the main gas-phase organic products of the reaction of three aldehydes and ketones with NO3•, and the total small molecule aldehydes and ketones yields can reach between 45%-60%. They mainly originate from the breakage of alkoxy radicals, and different breakage sites determine different product distributions. In addition, the SOA yields of the three unsaturated alcohols with NO3• were 7.1% ± 1.0%, 12.5% ± 1.9% and 30.0% ± 4.5%, respectively, which were much higher than those of similarly structured substances with O3 or OH radicals (•OH). The results of high-resolution mass spectrometry shows that the main components of Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) of the three unsaturated alcohols are dimeric compounds containing several nitrate groups, which are formed through the polymerization of oxyalkyl radicals.

Isoprenoid emissions from Schima superba and Cunninghamia lanceolata: Their responses to elevated temperature by two warming facilities

Isoprenoids (including isoprene (ISO) and monoterpenes (MTs)) are the majority of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) which are important carbon-containing secondary metabolites biosynthesized by organisms, especially plant in terrestrial ecosystem. Results of the warming effects on isoprenoid emissions vary within species and warming facilities, and thus conclusions remain controversial. In this study, two typical subtropical tree species seedlings of Schima superba and Cunninghamia lanceolata were cultivated under three conditions, namely no warming (CK) and two warming facilities (with infrared radiators (IR) and heating wires (HW)) in open top chamber (OTC), and the isoprenoid emissions were measured with preconcentor-GC–MS system after warming for one, two and four months. The results showed that the isoprenoid emissions from S. superba and C. lanceolata exhibited uniformity in response to two warming facilities. IR and HW both stimulated isoprenoid emissions in two plants after one month of treatment, with increased ratios of 16.3 % and 72.5 % for S. superba, and 2.47 and 5.96 times for C. lanceolata. However, the emissions were suppressed after four months, with more pronounced effect for HW. The variation in isoprenoid emissions was primarily associated with the levels of Pn, Tr, monoterpene synthase (MTPS) activity. C. lanceolata predominantly released MTs (mainly α-pinene, α-terpene, γ-terpene, and limonene), with 39.7 % to 99.6 % of the total isoprenoid but ISO was only a very minor constituent. For S. superba, MTs constituted 24.7 % to 96.1 % of total isoprenoid. It is noteworthy that HW generated a greater disturbance to physiology activity in plants. Our study provided more comprehensive and more convincing support for integrating temperature-elevation experiments of different ecosystems and assessing response and adaptation of forest carbon cycle to global warming.

The GFDL Variable‐Resolution Global Chemistry‐Climate Model for Research at the Nexus of US Climate and Air Quality Extremes

AbstractWe present a variable‐resolution global chemistry‐climate model (AM4VR) developed at NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) for research at the nexus of US climate and air quality extremes. AM4VR has a horizontal resolution of 13 km over the US, allowing it to resolve urban‐to‐rural chemical regimes, mesoscale convective systems, and land‐surface heterogeneity. With the resolution gradually reducing to 100 km over the Indian Ocean, we achieve multi‐decadal simulations driven by observed sea surface temperatures at 50% of the computational cost for a 25‐km uniform‐resolution grid. In contrast with GFDL's AM4.1 contributing to the sixth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project at 100 km resolution, AM4VR features much improved US climate mean patterns and variability. In particular, AM4VR shows improved representation of: precipitation seasonal‐to‐diurnal cycles and extremes, notably reducing the central US dry‐and‐warm bias; western US snowpack and summer drought, with implications for wildfires; and the North American monsoon, affecting dust storms. AM4VR exhibits excellent representation of winter precipitation, summer drought, and air pollution meteorology in California with complex terrain, enabling skillful prediction of both extreme summer ozone pollution and winter haze events in the Central Valley. AM4VR also provides vast improvements in the process‐level representations of biogenic volatile organic compound emissions, interactive dust emissions from land, and removal of air pollutants by terrestrial ecosystems. We highlight the value of increased model resolution in representing climate–air quality interactions through land‐biosphere feedbacks. AM4VR offers a novel opportunity to study global dimensions to US air quality, especially the role of Earth system feedbacks in a changing climate.

Seasonal estimates of ozone and secondary organic aerosol formation from volatile organic compounds in a rural atmosphere of India

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) serve as precursors for tropospheric ozone (O3) and Secondary Organic Aerosol (SOA) formation. The formation of O3 and SOA are the indicators of the oxidative capacity specific to a given chemical environment. The current study investigates the oxidative capacity of the relatively less explored tropical rural atmosphere. This study is accomplished by measuring the concentrations of various VOCs and combining them with OH loss rates to estimate the potentials for O3 and SOA formation (OFP and SOAP, respectively). Continuous diel VOC measurement data from Gadanki (13.5°N, 79.2°E), Peninsular India, encompassing four distinct seasons and comprising over 4000 samples, have been utilized to estimate OFP and SOAP and their variations across different seasons. Additionally, efforts have been made to comprehend the contribution of different VOC sources to O3 and SOA formation. The results indicate that, 1, 3, 6-trimethyl benzene (20.09 %) among the VOCs and aromatics (44.37%) among the VOC groups exhibit the highest OFP at the observational site. Among seasons, the post-monsoon period exhibits the highest OFP (31.94%). The increased presence of biogenic VOCs, such as ethylene, propylene, and 1-butene during monsoon, likely due to the increased vegetation cover can be attributed for the elevated OFP. Similarly, n-dodecane (43.22%) and the VOC group of alkanes (50.79%) show the highest SOAP. The summer season has the highest SOAP (29.7%), owing to the enhanced concentrations and photochemistry initiated by OH radicals. Within the PMF-modelled sources, biomass-burning VOCs make a substantial contribution to both OFP and SOAP, distinguishing the rural atmosphere from its urban counterpart, where traffic emissions predominantly influence OFP and SOAP.

Release of biogenic volatile organic compounds and physiological responses of two sub-tropical tree species to smoke derived from forest fire

Forests emit a large amount of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) in response to biotic and abiotic stress. Despite frequent occurrence of large forest fires in recent years, the impact of smoke stress derived from these forest fires on the emission of BVOCs is largely unexplored. Thus, the aims of the study were to quantify the amount and composition of BVOCs released by two sub-tropical tree species, Cunninghamia lanceolata and Schima superba, in response to exposure to smoke. Physiological responses and their relationship with BVOCs were also investigated. The results showed that smoke treatments significantly (p < 0.001) promoted short-term release of BVOCs by C. lanceolata leaves than S. superba; and alkanes, olefins and benzene homologs were identified as major classes of BVOCs. Both C. lanceolata and S. superba seedlings showed significant (p < 0.005) physiological responses after being smoke-stressed where photosynthetic rate remained unaffected, chlorophyll content greatly reduced and Activities of anti-oxidant enzymes and the malondialdehyde content generally increased with the increase in smoke concentration. Activities of anti-oxidant enzymes showed mainly positive correlations with the major BVOCs. In conclusion, the release of BVOCs following smoke stress is species-specific and there exists a link between activities of antioxidant enzymes and BVOCs released. The findings provide insight about management of forest fires in order to control excessive emission of smoke that would trigger increased release of BVOCs.
